Dog Training
Many dog owners don’t realise how important it is to train your dog. Unlike with children, we are unable to sit down and explain to the dog why certain behaviour is appropriate and others are not, so it is necessary to learn how to get the dog to understand our wishes and to get them to respond to a basic code of obedience. Dogs want to please their owners, so gentle guidance and patient training including rewards and praise will guide your dog towards the correct behaviour.
By training your dog, you are teaching them to live in harmony with humans. Importantly, it means spending time together- it is generally recommended to train for at least 10 minutes per day in the training stages to practice what has been learned. This should be an enjoyable bonding experience for both the owner and the dog, helping to strengthen your relationship and therefore the dog’s loyalty and desire to please you.
A trained dog will learn to respect the owner as the authority figure, and will be much easier to handle in public, or in situations such as visits to the veterinarian. Training helps to overcome common behavioural problems such as jumping on visitors, unnecessary barking and digging by not only teaching them right from wrong but adding variety to their life and thus preventing boredom.
